New to Paris. Is the Montmartre district reasonably accessible to the centre?
For example how long would it take to get from sacre Coeur to the Eiffel tower?
Does anyone know a site where you can type in a metro station & destination & get a route/travel times?

Montmartre is fairly central. The Eiffel Tower is at the opposite end of Paris on the other side of the river. You will need to take Metro line 12 from Abbesses or Pigalle to Assemblé Nationale, walk to Museé d'Orsay RER ligne C, then 3 stops to the Eiffel Tower. Should take half an hour or just over.

Thanks. I'm going to stay in M. and picked a fairly distant site to get an idea so it looks like the champs elysee for example is going to be very accessible.

if you're staying right up by Sacre Coeur itself it's a bit of a hike to get to Abbesses, though there's a funicular to get you up and down the hill.

The nearest metro station to the funicular is Anvers. I'd get a zone 1 ticket so you can use it all day around Paris and on the funicular as you'll need it!! those steps take some getting up! To get to the Eiffel Tower take line 2 direction Porte Dauphine getting off at Charles de Gaulle Etoile (Arc de Triomphe) then get line 6 direction Nation getting off at Bir-Hakeim. This takes 20 minutes usually. You walk along the river side to the Tower from Bir-Hakeim.

Thanks all. That site Mushroom 25 is just what I wanted.
The nearest metro to my hotel is Blanche. Do I get the impresssion that I'm in a steep part of town? Is walking difficult for the elderly!

While not a huge distance I would say that Monmartre is NOT that central.

It is inside their orbirtal motorway, but still some way out of the centre. According to Google maps it is 4.2km (2.6) miles from Sacre Cour to Notre Dame which is roughly the centre of Paris. It is 3.6 miles to the Eiffel Tower.

Years ago it was a separate village before Paris grew and encircled it.

I am not saying it is a problem being out there, but you will have to get a train (or walk) to get into the centre of Paris and to the main attractions.

Blanche is on the level. It's only steep going up to Montmartre, but there is a funicular railway. Follow the instructions given: Blanche to Charles de Gaulle then change for Bir Hakeim. By the way, this is the 'naughty' bit of Paris.

Monmartre is on a hill, and from the Sacre Coeur church you get great views over Paris.

However there are some VERY steep steps to get you up to Monmatre, see here (or search on "Monmartre Steps" in Google)

Here is a picture of Paris, and you just just see the church of Sacre Couer on top of the hill in the distance. It has a white domed roof and is just right of centre

However it is an amazing area, and is famous for where the painters stayed (Dali, Picasso etc) and was featured heavily in the film Moulin Rouge.

The Place du Tertre in Monmartre is where al the modern painter sell their paintings.

depends exactly where you are. Sacre Coeur is on top of a hill, the rest of Montmartre is down the slopes around it. As I mentioned, there is a funicular railway (uses metro tickets) to get you up to the church

But it looks as if you're somewhere on the Bd Clichy, which isn't particularly high or steep. Handy for the Erotic Museum too.
