DH Lawrence resided at the Inn for a while before starting to use a local house, Higher Tregerthen, which became a magnet for artists and writers.
Double is 95 a night a single 55 (and you will pay more in St Ives.....) - maybe worth exploring some of the B and Bs around Back St West and The Digey - right in the centre and close to Porthmeor Beach and the Harbour. St Ives has very strict segregation of visitor cars (kept out) and locals (so you need to arrange the permit with mein host).
It is particularly beautiful up there on West Penwith- very stark landscape with wonderful views over the sea..
Zennor is some 4 miles from St Ives.
Avoid Penzance and Hayle like the plague..

I've just taken a look at TripAdvisor. By switching from 'Hotels' to 'B&Bs', then ranking them with the cheapest first (but only accepting results with good reviews) these would seem to be possible places for you to stay. (I've not checked the distance from town but they're all listed as under £40 per night and they're generally quite a bit cheaper):
Thurlestone Guest House (18 'excellent' reviews, 3 'very good' ones and nothing below):

Glanmore Guest House (15 'excellent'. 2 'very good'. Nothing below):
