things to do on the south coast

In the summer me and mum will be visitng; plymouth, portsmouth, southampton and brighton but because of when the open days are we can't do one big trip and see them all so instead of going there, seeing the uni and going home we'll probably have a look around the town/city . . . I can see there's a brighton thread suggesting the pavillion, but what else is there in these other places?

As you've mentioned, Brighton's star attraction is the Pavilion:

With your interest in all things maritime, you can't afford to miss Portsmouth Historic Dockyard. It's one of Europe's leading historical attractions. You could easily spend a whole day there (but a shorter visit would still be worthwhile):

Plymouth is lovely, you need to look at a map, you can get a little ferry over into Cornwall for the day to Mount Edgecumbe, at Torpoint right opposite Plymouth Harbour http://www.plymouth.gov.uk/mountedgcumbe

When you get near to Southampton, my advice is give it a miss and go to the New Forest instead.

The Brighton Marina for cinema, shops, pubs, resturants, bowling. It's also free parking in the nearby multi-story.

I agree ref Southampton. You can drive by the docks and there's lots of shopping but that's about it.

In Plymouth,there is the historic Barbican-the oldest and earliest part of the city-dating from the 1500's. Across the harbour is the National Maritime Museum.

Plymouth is a very compact city.....there are small shops,and a good number of excellent restaurants,including Tanners,and Plymouth Gin,in the Barbican.A few minute's walk away is the Hoe-where Drake bowled, the Citadel, and the Mayflower Steps. City centre shopping is also a few minute's walk away.

Whata re you on about boxy, this trip will only be about 2 or 3 different weekends (portsmouth and southampton have consecutive open days so that can be done in one)

molly, I thought earlier you said you might not go away with the cadets but do volunteering instead. Are these not cadets trips?

Going away with cadets on summer camp is only for one week and if we went to these places we wouldn't be allowed to go round the cities on our own, this is for unis. i'm going with my mum for only a day or two at a time . . . I still want to go to the sea life centre . . .

I used to watch that programme . . .

Monkey world is nr the wareham forest in Dorset nr wool and not nr The new forest in hampshire, its quite a drive from the new forest....!
if your in Portmouth I can really recommend the Spinnaker tower
