I can reccommend the Lincoln Park zoo which is free of charge (particularly liked the gorilla house and lion house). There is also the tourist attraction of navy pier and close by that is the beach area and a planetarium. Can be very hot in the summer so you will need sunscreen.
try googling Tour Chicago and Tour Illimois and you will find several web sites that can give you all types of information on things to do in Chicago. There is also the miricle mile shopping and several museums.

If you're even remotely thinking about going to the AirVenture Oshkosh air show, you're probably to late to get a decent place to stay within a reasonable distance. We've attended numerous times and find that it's not for nothing that it's called the largest air show in the world...

I'd recommend you check out Appleton, Wisconsin for a base of operation while attending Oshkosh... it's about an hour away on really good highways and a beautiful town with lots of amenities...
Welcome to the U.S., by the way!

Thanks Clanad - I've already noted that accomodation is a bit thin on the ground at this time of year - bookmarked Appleton thanks x
