Caravans 'could be hired for urban holidays'

Thanks to Top Gear, caravans have been given the unfair image of being rubbish, annoying and dated. While this may actually be true, caravanning is still a fond hobby for many Brits, allowing us to get away from it all whenever we want and experience 10 feet of luxury.

Caravans could be hired for trips to places other than the countryside, it has been asserted by one group of holidaying experts.

Although rural areas are the traditional destination for those who chose to bring their accommodation along with them, urban spots are also a good option, according to the Camping and Caravanning Club.

Spokesman for the organisation, Jon Dale, said: "There are some nice locations within the city of London. People can still enjoy the adventure and lifestyle without having to go to the countryside."

"Big cities have a lot to offer for caravanners too. Take London for example, there you can visit Buckingham Palace, Big Ben and the London Eye without having to splash out on over-priced travel and accommodation"

Holidays of this type could also be taken in a tent or motorhome – the firm has 109 locations across Britain where facilities for these types of board are available.

The locations range from inner-city caravan parks to sub-urban fields, each offering great access to the city, and thanks to tram and underground services getting around is not an issue.

Although this may go against the caravanning "purists" principles, many people are opting to visit the city for once, rather than trekking into rural England.

In 2009, drinks company Bovril launched the country's first "extreme urban campsite".

It was located on top of a building on Shoe Lane in the capital – and was aimed at those who do not have the cash or time to venture outside the city's borders for a break.

Those interested in a camping trip could have a Q&A with a specialist in supplying the equipment to find out what they might need for this type of jaunt.
