A holiday to bustling Vietnam could be a great cultural break. It first came to the notice of the western world for the war during the 1960’s. However, the country is now seen as a popular holiday destination.

The beautiful and dramatic countryside is only one of the many attraction people have found in this interesting and historic part of the world. Three quarters of the country’ territory consists of mountains and hills.

Historically the area was dominated by the Chinese until about the 10th century. Then until the 19th century the country was self ruled and had the traditional eastern dynasty system. In 1858 the French invaded the country and occupied it until the end of the Second World War in 1945.

One of the best places to visit is Ho Chi Minh City. It is a vibrant and bustling place full of street vendors and motorbikes. The main street, Le Loi, runs through the heart of the city. At one end is the spectacular Opera house and at the other end is the majestic City Hall.

Binh Tay Market – known locally as Chon Lon – is a photographer's dream and is filled with local colour.

Another shopping area – the Cho Ben Thanh Market - is highlighted for its chopsticks and coffees. However, you must make time to stop in at the many galleries or to buy a piece of classic communist propaganda. The city has a long commercial tradition, according to the country's tourism authority.

A visit to the Rex Hotel will give you a flavour of the war. This is where the foreign correspondents used to gather during the war. The roof top offers a great view of the streets below.

If you have an extended stay in the city a visit to the Cu Chi Tunnels is a must. These were built by the Viet Cong and they served as supply lines during the war.

The climate of Vietnam is tropical and they also experience the monsoon every year. It may be helpful to investigate what the weather will be like at the time of year you will be there.
