Despite the current credit crunch more than one in seven Brits are planning to take a holiday abroad this year in spite of claims that the recession will give rise to huge numbers choosing to holiday at home.

Top Tips for beating the Credit Crunch:

Many of us are reluctant to sacrifice a holiday abroad and instead are looking for ways to reduce costs. Phone companies are providing a new motive aimed at people looking to book a holiday abroad in the form of cheap international calls, whether it’s a landline or mobile, so people can keep in contact while away and not have to worry about a hefty bill when they return from their holiday.

71 % of Brits have either booked a holiday or are planning to do so at some point this year with money saving ideas such as getting your vaccination jabs at your GP clinic, as many clinics don’t charge for common travel vaccinations you could save £76 on immunisation costs and reduce the overall cost of your holiday.

By pre-booking your airport parking you could half the cost you would normally pay, as many airports require 24 hours notice for advanced rates, you need to get booked in early to ensure great savings.

Look into and plan ahead the cheapest and most efficient way of getting to and from the airport, especially during peak times as you always expect to pay more. You could save a huge amount by taking a coach instead of the quicker and more comfortable option of a train, but by making small sacrifices you can save yourself a small fortune.

Taking out annual travel insurance if you travel abroad more than twice a year will definitely save you money. By putting all the family on one policy again can help to keep costs down. Alternatively it is becoming more common for people travelling abroad to consider not taking insurance out at all in order to save money, and in a recent study showing the number of people choosing not to as high as 23%.

By reducing the amount of luggage you take you can save on fees at the airport, by only checking in a couple of bags instead of one each, alternatively if you find it difficult to pack light you can book online in advance and save on baggage expenses.

Things to consider while on holiday:

People are still eager to book a getaway but their priority is now value for money, as opposed to the previous main concerns of good hotel reviews, star ratings and beach proximity.  Things such as free on-site activities and peaceful resorts are becoming more popular among people going abroad as people don’t have to pay to travel to get these benefits.

The search for places that can offer good value for money may lead some people to places that do not use the euro as their currency, such as Argentina, Turkey or Morocco whose beautiful sceneries attract visitors from all over.

The threat of swine flu has extended to many countries, posing a threat to the global travel and tourism industries, however there is a variety of information readily available with useful information on the virus itself as well as, modes of transmission, symptoms and prevention, providing people travelling abroad to an array of holiday destinations necessary information on measures to take to prevent the outbreak, thus encouraging people to maintain a high level of prevention and to still enjoy their holidays in the confidence they are fully equipped with knowledge of how to.
