Ireland Great Holiday Destination

16:36 Mon 24th May 2010 |

With many of us looking to holiday in the UK to keep the budget down; what better place to visit than Ireland. It is across the water for those of us who insist on getting off the mainland but it has the added benefits that you can understand the locals and you know what the food will be like. Plus, of course, we cannot forget the opportunities for those of us who like a tipple.

A journalist for a leading newspaper has recommended a walking holiday in the fair isle of Ireland.

The article in the Guardian says that a trip to the country's rural areas – beginning in Dublin's Marlay Park - is "exhilarating". The journalist comments that visiting this green space - which located on the edge of the city – is a good way to start a trip.

His article describes ambling onto the Wicklow Way, a 132-kilometre trek which includes the country's largest region of peaks. "Within just a few hours, I was high up in the heathery hills, granite outcrops and peat-coloured streams of the humpy Wicklow Mountains," he wrote. He was also struck by the huge contrast between "country and city" and recounted viewing "many extraordinary scenic and historic landmarks".

A city break to Dublin could be recommended for those who prefer the feel of concrete under their feet than grass. The local tourism authority recommends a visit to Saint Patrick's Cathedral, which has contributed greatly to Irish life.

One of the best ways to research a trip to the Emerald Isle is to have a look on the internet. Ireland does have its own tourist board website which includes information about places to visit, accommodation and getting around. Also on the site is a section about festivals and events. It may be that your visit to Ireland could be timed to coincide with a specific event. Be careful to book early in this case as the event may be popular with lots of travellers.

In addition, do not forget to buy travel insurance. Even though Ireland is a friendly nation it can still be difficult to get help when things go wrong.
