Take A Ticket To Ride In Liverpool
For those of us who are thinking about having a more inexpensive holiday at home this year perhaps we should look to the North West of the UK for an interesting and budget destination.
Liverpool was the European city of Culture in 2008 and as a result has seen an increase in tourist interest. Historically, though, the city had a very different feel. It was once one of Britain’s largest maritime superpowers during the time of the empire. The city was an important centre for trade with almost the whole of the known world at the time.
The city now has a Beatles Quarter which includes little souvenir shops and bars with names and themes related to the legendary pop group.
The famous Cavern Club, on Matthew Street, has long since gone. However, on the original site there is now a bronze statue of a young John Lennon leaning against the Cavern Wall of fame. The wall consists of 1,800 bronzed brocks with the names of acts, some almost forgotten, which performed there between 1957 and 1973. The wall of fame forms the front of the Cavern Pub. The club itself has been recreated across the road.
However, there is more to Liverpool’s music scene than the fab four. The city first came into its musical heyday in the 1950’s and 1960’s when stars such as Frankie Vaughan and Billy Fury reigned. But the Merseybeat scene would put all that in the shade with the likes of Gerry and the pacemakers and, of course, the Beatles. The top acts have just kept on coming since then including Echo and the Bunnymen, Frankie Goes To Hollywood, The Farm and most lately the Zutons.
As well as music the city is also known for sport, particularly the world famous Liverpool Football Club who are often in the top ranks of the premiership.
A stroll around the UNESCO listed water front will take your breath away. Sights such as The Three Graces, Albert Dock and Pier Head are as iconic as they are dramatic and are sure to fill up the memory card on your camera.
