A break to one of England’s true landmarks, Windsor Castle, one of the oldest castles in the world is the perfect getaway if you’re looking for a holiday with years of history, contemporary shopping, fine dining, leisure activities and vast quantity of events.
What Windsor Castle has to offer?
Windsor is the oldest and largest occupied castle in the world, providing plenty of historical information and covers a vast area of about 13 acres. Windsor Castle contains magnificent State Apartments furnished with treasures from the Royal Collection.
The castle has many attractions to offer its visitors including the infamous Band Concerts, which take place between the months of June and July and can be seen in the scenic Jubilee Garden.
A short distance from the big smoke of London, the castle makes for a lovely day out in the countryside and, if visitors are lucky, they may even catch a quick glimpse of the Queen herself. As such Windsor Castle is seen as a working royal palace, so opening arrangements may change at short notice, as such it would be advisory to check before planning a visit.
The magnificent State Apartments are furnished with some of the finest works of art from the Royal Collection, including paintings by Rembrandt, Rubens, Canaletto and Gainsborough and is well worth a visit if you’re interested in history and tradition.
From October to March visitors can also enjoy George IV's private apartments, among the most richly decorated interiors in the Castle, providing another reason to visit the exquisite castle and witness the amazing inner beauty that the castle offers.
Tours of Windsor Castle and St George's Chapel are self-guided. An audio tour is included in the ticket price. A family audio tour and family activity trails are also available in English.
Things to consider while visiting Windsor Castle:
Windsor Castle has become one of England’s most popular tourist attractions, having a wide appeal with people of all ages and interests. The castle is situated within walking distance to two railway stations, Central Station (Windsor Royal Station), which is a less steep walk up to Windsor Castle than the Windsor and Eton Riverside Station, which has the advantage of being closer but with a steep climb.
Those travelling from London Waterloo will take the train to Windsor and Eton Riverside, which takes an hour. Those travelling from London Paddington or Reading can take the train to Slough and then change for a connecting service to Windsor and Eton Central.
If you choose to travel by car should take the M4 motorway, which runs between London and Bristol. Motorists should get off at Junction Six, and once at Windsor Castle, park and ride facilities are available for visitors so there is no long distance walking, unless you choose to walk and admire the beautiful landscape.
Windsor Castle is more than just a day out; it is an attraction which gives visitors an insight into the heritage of the British nation and its monarchy, with it breathtaking landscape, which on a sunny day is a perfect place for a picnic.
