Young Travellers Risking All For Lack Of Travel Insurance

Younger travellers are playing fast and loose with trip-ruining risks when jetting off on short breaks claims new market research. Many think they can save money by not buying insurance and this surplus can be spent on having fun at their destination.

More than 1.5 million 18-24 year olds plan on taking at least one short break over the coming year, but almost a quarter say that they will not bother with travel insurance.

Older does mean wiser in this case, with only 10% 45-54 year olds saying that they are prepared to travel – even just for a weekend – without travel insurance.

A third of younger travellers heading off without travel insurance say that they do not need it because they will not be away for long.

"Short breaks appeal to younger jetsetters who have the freedom and cash to escape for a spontaneous weekend away," commented a representative of the company that commissioned the research.

"But it's worrying to see how many are overlooking what is a holiday essential. Whether you are going away for a couple of days or a fortnight's holiday, you are just as susceptible to theft, loss or accidents."

Short breaks are far more popular among younger travellers, with almost a third saying that they travel for short holidays compared to 17 per cent of older holidaymakers.
