What's Causing All This Extreme Weather?

This may be a naive question, I know it's coming from the Atlantic, but why so much in the last few weeks? Storm after storm after storm. Is there a meterological reason?

the jetstream is parked over us meaning that the storms are 'training' in - remember the cold winter three years ago, then the jetstream was way to the south, letting in the Arctic....normally the stream would be above us, the Faroes notrmally getting these storms, and maybe the tip of the north of Scotland.
it's just winter, doesn't seem particularly extreme
(and there's no sign of a move at the moment!)
