I genuinely get depressed in the summer but come alive once the winter weather is on its way - I've read online that this is now recognised as reverse seasonal affective disorder - is there anyone else out there who is a fellow sufferer?

Hi there. It does sound like you have summer SAD (often mistakenly called reverse SAD). I understand how hard it is during the summer as I have summer SAD--winter and fall weather, cool, and darker, make me come alive, it's amazing. I started a support group website with lots of info and please join if you feel you have this--we have several UK members in fact (I...

do you get hay fever or other summer allergies?
Question Author
No - I just get that feeling that "all's right with the world" when its overcast, rainy, fog, snowy, dark.
perhaps try this in body and soul...lot of medical knowlegde there
Yeah - wall to wall sunshine, hot and sticky nights and days (WEATHER that is!), No rain - drought even, sunrise before the night has even started, days that end after you think you should be in bed, tossing and turning, midges, flies, wasps......Eugh! I'm with you, Queries!
Oh and insect bites and heat bumps!
A very interesting question, queries; I must say nothing brightens me up better than a warm, sunny day, they really bring a spring in my step even though I might feel a bit down due to problems and worries... However, I do like winter as this is a time I don't HAVE TO be in the garden cleaning it up and I can catch up on quite a lot of reading. Quite honestly, it's like going into hibernation mode with just the basic activities going on! It would be interesting to know what it is about summer that you don't like????
You're not alone, there was an article about it last yr in The Times

You are definitely living in the right country as we have more winter than summer. But maybe if you have a genuine illness you should emmigrate to Iceland or somewhere with long dark winters.
I dislike summer because there's no escape from the heat when it's at it's worst (unless you're lucky enough to have air conditioning). Also the daylight just drags on and on until late into the evening , whereas there is something comforting when it becomes dark at teatime.

So I do look forward to winter, and there are no better days than those in winter, early spring and late autumn just after sunrise when it's really cold and there's not a cloud in the blue sky.
Bibblebub, where do you live to have 'no escape from the heat'? This can't be the UK you're talking about....
Dorset, and I personally don't like it when it gets above 20C.
seasonal affective disorder is not about how the conditions of summer or winter afftect you!
...we ALL hate insect bites, allergies and being too hot or too cold etc etc, but these things do not cause genuine depression - its a genuine medical condition believed by some to be caused by lack of vitamin d...
They may not depress you but they sure as H*ll do me!

Whow - loads of responses! Just the fact that the sun is out can make me feel depressed - and yes, genuine depression, not just fed up as such. And also, I'm part Italian so that makes the whole thing unusual. If I could afford to I would definitely emigrate - northern Russia or somewhere where its dark and cold. Hope you all have a sunny weekend!!!!!
