14a More than one 5 across, according to the bard, on the picket lines? (8)
- T - I - E - S I've gone with STRIKERS, but it seems a weak clue or am I missing something. 8d Gets tired but falls into line (7) D - E - S - S. I've gone with DRESSES, but it seems to be another famous Times misprint again. Should have been 'attired', not 'tired'. Thanks

I presumed a poetic way of saying foot(pad).

Don't understand dresses either, unless tired as in dressing leather, but it seems very far fetched.
Is tired a Shakespearean (e.g.) way of saying Attired?
Dressed in the sense of straightened the ranks of soldiers on the parade ground?
tire is an archaic word meaning to dress http://dictionary.ref...e?r=75&src=ref&ch=dic so no misprints involved
