I'm not sure, but think the Vulcan just flew over me! I heard a loud engine, but by the time I got to the door it had flown over and I could only see its rear end. I live a bit north of Leicester - could it have been the Vulcan? I've tried to find details of its flights but haven't found anything.
XH558 was scheduled to fly her last ever displays today, starting at the Gaydon Heritage Motor Centre in Warwickshire and then going on to Old Warden in Bedfordshire. The aircraft is based at Robin Hood Airport, near to Doncaster.
So a return route via the Leicester are would seem to be quite possible.
XH558 will fly for the final time next weekend, touring the north of the country on Saturday and the south on Sunday. Details of the flight paths are due to be published on Tuesday.
Wonderful! We lived in Oakham in the mid 1960s as my husband was in the RAF at Cottesmore, and they used to fly over our house when they were doing 'circuits and bumps'. Wonderful machines.
I find it strange that a weapon of war incites such emotion. Before you think I'm having a go, I'm not, I think the Spitfire is the most beautiful machine made by man. Strange tho isn't it.
Perhaps the emotions are affected by the memories evoked by the aircraft. My memories are of a young married couple with two small children living in a lovely town.
According to the only online map I could find, it wasn't supposed to go near me, but it did. Almost over my house, 3.45.pm. Quite a sight.
I tried to draw the attention of passers-by, but they said they only spoke Roumanian !
