Something odd where 21D meets 33A. Either the latter is an alternative spelling not in my BRB or there's been an extremely rare error in the setting. Or is it me having a bad morning?
No, you're correct, the solution to 21D needs to make a slightly unorthodox diagonal jump to the right when it reaches 33A. The word play of 33A makes it clear that the 'clashing' spelling is the one intended.
Not just you, I can see the same problem. 21d would end in an E, and the corresponding letter in 33a would be an L. I think my parsing is correct for both.
That was my way of saying that the 'E' required at the end of TRANSE does appear in TITTLE-TATTLER, but in the wrong place (presumably the cause of Azed's little slip).
I would suggest putting 'E/L' in the overloaded square where 21D and 33A intersect.
