sorry to have misinterpreted you shammydodger, and I see your point about having to know whether your teaching's working or not. In this case, though, I can't see how cazie's teacher would be better informed by knowing that cazie had asked for assistance on a website. I'm still convinced that such requests are a perfectly legitimate way of carrying out research and not even distantly related to (say) buying and downloading an essay verbatim.
An individual can ask any question in any way they like, we hope that cazie as a good student (if app.) would have the foresight to dissiminate this information and interpret accordingly to provide his/her own opinion in relation to the specific issue they are required to.

In carrying out "research" most institutions and even individuals will ask direct questions requiring a direct response - for a particular market survey or for a dissertation / thesis.

Learned people on here should be knowledgeable and trusting enough to realise that providing links to resources or giving a direct unique answer will enable the Qr (cazie in this case) to take the information and put it into their own words. If they don't, it is only themselves they are cheating, it is hardly going to affect us now, is it.

That is what learning is about.

No it wasnt a homework question, i am interested in History and the Civil wars of the British Isles have always baffled me. I am currently trying to assist my daughter in her studies but unfortunately this area of History is not my forte. Shammy, no the first part of my last message was aimed at you and a few others you were a great help, thankyou! The answer was not what i required but advice on how to understand the Civil wars.

Cazie,

respect your answer, hopefully waldopepper will settle down now.

Good luck with your daughters studies, hopefully things are a little clearer now?

Cazie

Thanks

Everybody else

Thanks too. Yet again, many views expressed. And nobody coming to virtual blows. Now, where's that News thread on animal testing..... :)

don't know if you've seen this cazie (and apologies for assuming you were doing homework):

Now we're on the topic of home work/research. Is it any different getting answers from the internet or from a book?

We very seldom get knowledge from experiment or origional sources.

No I am not a teacher, but I hae been taught, and there are times when you read the course material

and then read the q,

and think, God this is nothing to do with it. I have been there - it's like that.

And also I have been repeated ly helped by asking someone to summarise a subject in five sentences. If they know what they are talking about, they can do it.

I do not regard this as cheating I regard this as research.

And yes Cazie, I thought some people cd have better spent their time answering your q and not slagging you off.....
