From the very first episode which is called " Big Brother" there is a scene in the Nags Head with Del,Rodney & Trigger. Del says to Trigger " Here you know my brother?" & Trigger says " Yeah of course i do,how you doing Dave?".Trigger for seem reason seemed to think his name was Dave. There is a scene from the episode "Homesick" between Rodney and Trigger where Rodney asks Trigger why he calls him Dave. Trigger: " You were at her funeral weren't you Dave?", Rodney:" Trigger why do you call me Dave? my name is Rodney", Trigger: " I thought it was Dave", Rodney: " No it's Rodney", Trigger: " You sure?", Rodney: " Yeah i'm positive,i've looked it up on my birth certificate and passport. It is definitely Rodney", Trigger: "Oh well you live and learn,so what's Dave a nickname like?", Rodney: " No you are the only one that calls me Dave.Everybody else calls me Rodney, and the reason they call me Rodney is because Rodney is my name", Trigger: "Oh well,i shall have to get used to calling you Rodney", Rodney: " Thank you", Trigger: " Here Basil,You going to get this meeting started? me and Dave ain't got all night"
Basically, it was a one-off joke in the first episode, and John Sullivan decided that it helped define Trigger's character, so it became a running joke.
My favourite one is when Trigger goes something like 'I hear Del and Racquel are going to have a baby. If it's a girl they're going to call it Joan after Del's mum. If it's a boy they're going to call it Rodney... after Dave'.
