I have recently changed over the bulbs in my bathroom, from GU10 75w halogen, to GU10 LEDs. Originally I put the highest wattage that I could get, ( 5w ) in but they were not bright enough ...nearly but not quite. So I ordered the highest wattage I could get from Ebay, which were 9w.

I have just tried these in but they are not even as bright as the 5w ones !

Can anybody shed some light ( ! ) on this please ?

It's all to do with Lumens found this chart that may help
40 W Incandescent; 450 lumens; 4-5W LED
60 W Incandescent; 800 lumens; 7-12W LED
75 W Incandescent; 1100 lumens; 10-19W LED
100 W Incandescent; 1600 lumens; 18-24W LED
150W Incandescent; 2200 lumens; 25-30W LED.
As was indicated in reply to your previous question on this subject, you should forget wattages and look at the power in lumens as a guide. Wattage indicates how much power the bulbs use. Lumens indicate how bright they are (which, for the same wattage, will be a measure of their efficiency).

The chair...thanks for your reply.

The difficulty with these GU10 LEDs is that I can't find any that are more than 550 lumens, when the original Halogen bulbs were at least 1100 lumens. So perhaps... therein lies the reason that most people haven't changed over to LEDs yet !

To repeat....my bathroom fitting took 2 x 75w halogen bulbs, and was more than bright enough. But I can't find their replacement locally, and on the 'net, they are about £11 each ! I can't really justify £22 to replace them.

So...hence my quest to find a suitable replacement, using LEDs !

But I still don't understand why these new 9w LEDs that arrived today are dimmer than the 5w ones I bought locally last week ?
Were they cheap?

Did they come from a reputable supplier?

Under £12 for 4 Hoppy, and they appear to have all the necessary kite-markings. I have re-checked on their website and they appear to be as advertised, so maybe it was my fault to expect more than they could deliver.

But the difference between 5w and 9w is quite high, so I am still not sure why they are dimmer.
Bizarrely I've just changed some 7w ones for 5w and they are brighter!
That sounds suspiciously cheap for LED bulbs.

I doubt they are kosher.

Hoppy...here is the ebay page that I ordered from ...looks kosher to me but I would value your opinion !

I don't know Mikey, but as they are not performing I suspect they are substandard.
75W GU10 halogens are around £2.80 +VAT at my wholesaler - even on Amazon they are under £4, like this example;

Not sure where you looked to find them at £11 each...?

When looking at LEDs the important criteria are light output (Lumens) and colour temperature (in degrees Kelvin, K). It's odd that bulbs have always been traditionally measured by the power they consume (in Watts) rather than their light output.

For what it's worth, your 75W GU10 halogens would be around 1100 Lumens, yes, but the colour temp is quite cold at just 2700K.
