Just been watching Mike Oldfield's bio. Ahhh I can remember the summer of 1973 hearing Tubelar Bells resounding from open windows on balmy evenings, wakky baccy in the air.

It was pointed out in the program that the opening has subtle variations, 7 beats to the bar, then 8 beats to the bar, then 7 beats to the bar, and so on, to stop it being too repetitive.
Also it changes considerably through the whole album with many different styles and instruments so how anyone can say it is one long dirge defeats me.
Maybe they listened to the first 2 minutes then gave up.
If it was one long dirge why was it so popular and continues to be listened too?
