For the past week, whenever I switch on my computer I get a warning message advising me my version of Windows Microsoft is not genuine and I may be a victim of counterfeiting. I have had the system for 2 years without this message appearing. any advice. could it be a virus etc.

Not a virus. It is genuine. Just a couple of weeks ago Microsoft put out an automatic update called 'Verification Tool'. This checks your version of windows. The message means that a version of Windows from the same installation CD has already been registered.

Only way to avoid it is to use a restore point from before the download, and then don't allow the 'Verification Tool' to be installed next time it downloads.

Thanks for reply. If I jut ignore it {as I have done so far) will this cause any problems.

It won't cause problems, other than the constant nags, but it will restrict what future downloads you can install. Read more about it on this other forum

Thanks. It has answered my questions and put my nind at ease
I have the same message and have no intention of shelling out for a copy of windows xp so late in its life when vista is just around the corner which I will buy.
Course you will Matt.
Vista is hardly just round the corner.

If you bought the PC from a supplier that is still in existance then you have a right to go back to them for a legit copy, plus you could get them in all sorts of trouble if you decided to report it if you had proof.

In relative terms,Vista is just around the corner ie early next year.

FYI billym,I will be buying Vista for its increased media capabilites with the 360.

Sounds like your uncle in Wales has sold you a duff !!!!

why not buy a kosher piece of software !!!
