Can any christian please explain to me just HOW you get your morals from the bible?
Theland posted in another thread asking where atheists get their morals from. Its not rocket science. As long as people object to been murdered, raped or stolen from, then murder, rape and thieving will be immoral.
But as someone who has read the bible cover to cover, I completely fail to see how you can live a moral life based on biblical scripture. Its a sick and twisted compilation of ancient, barbaric texts that condone all that modern civilization would consider backward.
I am genuinely mystified as to how christians see the bible as a moral guide.

Morals are a learnt thought pattern leading to a particular behaviour choice, whether learnt from the bible, ancient religious scripture or from your parents/ grandparents/ society. So whether you learn your morals from the bible or not, you still have morals.
Whether they (the bibles moral teachings) are acceptable in today's society or not is another matter... Luckily I trusted my parents to teach me well, and they did, without the bible involved.

You havnt read the bible have you?
The Ten Commandments and teachings of Jesus.
Brought up RC - was never told the Bible was my rule book , it was a book of Parables written long ago.

Learnt my morals from my Parents and School/Church along easily understood Christian values.

Those have stood me in good stead for 62 years.
Do you discriminate between people who are poor and people who are on the take, Mamya? Do you acknowledge such a distinction exists?
I think it's important that people feel comfortable with themselves. I also think people should be honest.
And Amen to that too.
Get off your soapbox theland. You are entitled to believe whatever you like. So is everyone else. If someone wants to believe the moon is made of green cheese, that is their concern. I believe what I want to believe, that is my concern. You want to believe the bible is the truth, that's up to you. But you do not have the right to shove it at anyone else. Give it a rest mate.
Sorry Waterboatman. Yoh seem upset. I do not shove anything to anybody.
But this is R and S is it not?
For what purpose does it exist?
To compliment each other on our shared atheism, and form a mob to attack those who disagree?
"Give it a rest mate," is very patronising, like the words of wisdom from an older, "Man Of The World," to a young upstart.
I refuse to compete with you, as you obviously have something to teach me, and I look forward to the first lesson.
No competition, just fed up with your inane prattle.
Then I am very sorry for my inane prattle and how it has affected your peace.
I shall go back to where I came from then just for you, and give you and those who share your views a well earned rest.
Very sorry for any offence caused.

//The Ten Commandments and teachings of Jesus.//
Is that the best that you can come up with Theland? Do you wilfully ignore the atrocities committed/ordered by god or have you not read the bible in its entirety?
Do think that its is moral to order a rape victim to marry her rapist?
Do you think stoning people to death for the 'crime' of picking up sticks on the sabbath is moral?
Do you think drowning an entire planet is morally acceptable?

You HAVE to answer yes or be at odds with your deity.
//Do you discriminate between people who are poor and people who are on the take, Mamya? Do you acknowledge such a distinction exists?//

Not sure where that is taking us , I acknowledge there is a difference between the two , not sure how I would the discriminate against either group or why I would have the need to.

I can see I have misread your use of a word, you mean can I tell them apart?

Mostly but not always.
Waterboatman has sailed away to calmer waters.
