No frills, but very reliable, excellent runners and easy to park, and the 1.25 - 1.4 engine can feel surprisingly powerful. These are available at autotrader.co.uk for around 600-800 as private sales. A dealership will probably charge you quite a bit more for one (although you may then get a warranty for a few quid extra). Other good candidates could be the Renault Clio, Citroen Saxo or a Peugeot 106. Do spend an extra 100 or so on getting any car checked out by the AA or RAC before you buy, as this will almost certainly save you a packet in the long term. It's a big decision, but it's a great feeling, parking your new pride and joy and just looking at it on the street! I would also advise you to go to www.parkers.co.uk and check out the reviews of Fiestas etc.
i have a blue l reg fiesta had it for 3 years now and it is only used as a car for my chores. Reliable and sound as any car i have ever driven. OK it wont set any land speed records or turn heads but it seems to be the general consensus that this is PERFECT for a first time car. I am in the Lake district if you are interested in buying 400.00. If you are leave an email address (get a new one) and i will discuss.
Gosh this is better than ebay/
