Put simply, both are ways of describing something by giving something to which it can be prepared. The major difference is that similies use the terms "like" and "as" for comparison, metaphors do not:

"as white as snow" is a simile
"the snow was a white blanket covering the field" is a metaphor
To complicate matters, both may be described as imagery.
