The hire car company in my case phoned the DVLA.
I didn't have a photo license at that point.

Thanks both, that was the link I was looking for.
I hired online once as the 'insurance' was cheaper.

^^that would be worth looking into, thanks.
I do hate being conned. Did it online and the insurance was reasonable so took it. Went to pick up car a few days later and they tried to sell me insurance and quoted me some price which was substantially more.
Gav - did you have to put a deposit down?
Nailit...Very important to clarify the size of the Excess that is applied, and also the cost of having this reduced or removed altogether.
Paid for it online with a company. Turned up at local airport to pick up car and it was hertz. Actually I was have way through doing it when I remembered I had actually taken out the insurance.

when I was younger (many moons ago now..) I worked in the car hire business, so Im aware of some of the tricks that they pull, but we have a very good local company that dont even ask for a deposit.
We usually use Hertz when we go back to Ireland. I find them the simplest to use.
Try and book with a company that offers full/full or bring back same on fuel. Unless you are planning using the car a lot. But the price these companies charge you for fuel upfront is extortionate. I have used Economycarhire before an agent. Don't go for the cheapest deal.
