My other half is going to Germany at the weekend for 3 months and we are trying to work out which is the best way to go as regards calling him calling me. He is with 02 for his mobile at the mo but was thinking of getting a German pay-as-you-go SIM rather than pay 02's international rates.
Thanks McMouse. I've used Skype for video calls before once or twice but don't really know how it all works. Would that mean he would have to have access to Wi-Fi to use it as he's going to an army camp and will be spending a lot of time sitting in puddles i the middle of nowhere? And can you only call people with Skype accounts (he'll be wanting to phones Nans etc who just have phones)?
I use Localphone to call my husband in the States - would never use anyone else - you get 5 minutes free call when you sign up and you can add credit as low as $1 - really cheap rates - calling Germany is 0.7 p per minute on the landline. 4.4p on a mobile.....( just checked the rates for you :)
I am a bilt late but I am sure it will help many others. The cheapest solution definitely is voip phone service. This service is mainly popular because of the low cost international calls. Just search on internet and go for any provider like Axvoice, ooma, packet and many others.
