What do 17 year old girls drive these days?

Must be cute, nippy, but not too stupid to insure.

Any suggestions?

Tony I've been on Autotrader looking at the Figaro. Are they all Automatics and convertibles? What petrol do they use and are they expensive to run. I bet they are. They are beautiful though. I've seen quite a few of them around here.

Yes ladybirder they are all automatics and all have a retractable roof, ordinary unleaded petrol should get around 38 mpg.

Those two don't go hand in hand afaic.

These days new young drivers are offered the option of "the back box" (of surveillance) it monitors their driving habits: speed/braking etc. stops short of checking whether they've come back before midnight and washed their private parts properly but apparently signing up to this atrocity gets their insurance significantly lowered.

Not sure about the car - I like the Fiat 500 Abarth but that might be a bit too nippy!

The 'black box' certainly does help Ap, as I said earlier. Daughter was looking at about £1500pa but with this thing she got it for about £650pa. Hopefully it will pay off in the long run.

I'm surprised that the prices are so close together Captain, on a 1991 car and a 200? something one.
Tony, do you know which is the best buy? Normally I would say the newer the better as a rule of thumb but I don't know anything about these except I love the look of them.
Anybody ever had one?

Well ladybirder with the Figaro you would most likely have to keep on top of it maintenance wise due to the age of them, body parts would be fairly difficult to find and expensive mechanically they are straight forward ( Nissan Micra engine ). They will always be worth decent money so I don't think you would lose much money if you sold it on ( maybe gain on it ).
The Fiat 500 on the other hand is much more modern but there are thousands of them around so they will depreciate quite quickly.

Tony thank you. I wouldn't touch a Fiat 500, great little car but too many of them about. I like to drive something a little 'different'.
I spoke to my automative engineer friend about the Nissan Figaro. He nearly fainted. I got a resounding No for lot of the reasons you have mentioned. He also said it's too low to the ground I'll never get out of it. So I'll just put a picture on the bedroom wall:-{}
