I've nearly (with difficulty) filled in the grid, I've solved 12 down. So far - so good but I can't work out who the 12 down is and all my 'varieties' appear to be non-words!
Could someone enlighten me a bit?

It's hard to give away enough but not too much! Have a close look at the unclued at the start of row two and the unclued at 17 D - and try to picture them as slightly longer words. (The others are the same, but nowhere near as obvious.)The title will help - I hope. The 12 D is female and not MM - there was an earlier thread.
