Nhs Stories

Just been reading a couple of stories about how the NHS is going down the tubes and might not have any money to pay its staff in a few years time. We know someone who is about 2 years away from retirement from the NHS (afte working for them for 30+ years), so is due a very nice workplace pension. Any advice .... you don't suppose that our friend could end up with no workplace pension at all - or are they legally bound to pay up?

as an NHS pensioner almost all your post can be summed up as rubbish
Your fren will know the NHS pension structure - and I have no idea why he is asking you .... It is a rare pay-as-you-go scheme and so the pension contributions are spent by the govt in the current financial year - so isnt REALLY a pension scheme as we know it
The great secret of the NHS pension pot is that there is no pension pot ( Bevan 1948 )
Your fren will be under the 1995 and 2008 scheme and there is not an awful lot he or they can do about it
and yes they are legally obliged to pay up ( Human Rights Act surprisingly - the pensioner to be has made contributions for a legally enforceable expectation. ) - altho they can and have changed how future contributions will be treated. ( but cant change the effect of contributions already made )
Oh and medical contributions outweighed pension pay outs for the current financial year by at least £2 bn - yup two billion - nice little earner for the govt. The cross over point ( where conts DON'T cover the pensions is 2026 )
and Yeah Eddie I was gonna say
I am the only one answering the question ....
Honestly I hve no idea why he asked you details of the scheme
and yes I used to give pensions advice for the 1994 and 2008 schemes

what the bloody hell does a plane have to do with the finances of the NHS? One costs ten million and saves huge opcosts from hiring third parties and the likes of Ryan Air, the NHS costs tens of billion and there are huge savings to be had, just like in the police, moneys from behind scenes that can be used to to support the front line and still make savings. For example, why oh why, do we need 5 regional police forces in the Southwest - axe them all and into one and we are still smaller than the Brummy or Mancunian police, thats four chief constables out, four finance directors and half their teams, four pr directors and two-thirds their teams, four HR directors and half their teams and best of all, four Commissioners and all their teams.
eddie - // workplace pension. Any advice .... you don't suppose //
asking for advice .....
you mean the fren' chokkie is asking me to advise HIM on his frenz' pension ? - well it is not a bad one actually - and the planned crappy changes in 2016 will hardly affect him but are not retrospective. and are also not voluntary - everyone in future will be shoe-horned onto a CARE pension the details of which have yet to be worked out .....
