You sometimes hear reports of fantastic price paid for musical instruments associated with particular stars. Could the money spent on them be considered a good long term investment?

I would say yes, unless they get investigated by operation yewtree
Depends on who the instrument belonged to. I wouldn't but Joe Dolce's ukulele for instance.
