A good start would be for a custodial sentence to be introduced for the first offence of carrying a knife.

Knife crime has seen a very small rise (2%) in the past year, according to figures released by the ONS in July:
[i]The Office for National Statistics said the 2% rise in all knife crime offences in the 12 months to March marked the end of a downward trend in the previous four years but the total remained more than 50% below its peak six years ago.
The increase to 26,370 offences was announced ahead of a new “two strikes and you’re out” mandatory prison sentence for repeated possession of a knife or blade coming into effect on Friday. More than 1,000 extra offenders are expected to be jailed every year under the measure.[i]
I think that knife crime *is* taken seriously, but I don't agree that a first offended is the way to go. I think the 'two strike' solution makes more sense.

/// a better start would be for AOG to get his facts right ab initio as they say ///
A better start would be for EDDIE51 to get his facts right, the link he rushed out in a failed attempt to prove me wrong, was regarding crime in general.
But that did not stop such as you jumping in to also make a fool of yourself, research the facts, before jumping into the fray.

Note I also used a Guardian link, so as not to be accused of just believing in what the Daily Mail says, you understand?

Thanks for your factual imput, which I have just noticed after I posted my facts.

Not if you were a victim of the 'second' strike, I wouldn't imagine.

/// Police numbers are about to be drastically cut. This on top of 5000 less officers since 2010. The Home Office obviously are unconcerned if they are prepared to have less Police in those areas. ///
Never misses to gain a few political points, does Gromit.
No good using more officers, if their hands are being constantly tied behind their backs, let the police do their job, 'stop and searches' especially.

/// The police can search you if they have reasonable suspicion that violent crime is to take place or you have committed a crime. Do you advocate changing ///
In areas where there is known to be a high level of gangs and 'gang warfare' then perhaps it would not come amiss for a few periodic individual searches to take place, if only to dissuade some from carrying offensive weapons on their persons.
