The Greek Orthodox Church “views cremation as a violation of the human body and forbids its members from reducing their bodies to ash”. Hence there are no facilities in Greece for cremation.

Like Naomi said, a religious thing - but this is more widespread than just in Orthodox Greece eg apparently cremation is illegal in Malta

But in all of these places (Spain and Portugal for example) it's commonplace that you only rent a left-luggage type space. If the rent is not paid your bones are cleared out after a period of time.
In actual fact the same is true of our cemeteries if you read the small print. And to be honest the way land is running short, we may have to bring in a smartish turn-round period.

Svejk - I think it was his child he cremated - concerned locals put the fire out so he made off with the charred body which he kept for a while at home.
