I've just posted this elsewhere

spare a thought for those in Cumbria, all schools closed tomorrow, one of my younger sisters being lucky as the only house with the electricity on - she's invited two very old folk over for dinner and the evening, only 1/4 of her village on. These two, one's over 90 and her birthday, the other mid 80s and trying to cook crumpets in a frying pan over a fire.

Lancaster, Carnforth, Kendal all closed, never mind those to the north, massive flooding of the lower Kent......

My sister's partner called his bro in Keswick who lives close to the River Greta -"I've seen a garden shed and three static caravanss go past today...."

This is Kendal, an old school friend of my eldest sister and me, flooded out apparently.....

she's always been our most charitable sibling, so it doesn't surprise me but well done her. I asked her about food, 'we have plenty' but the neighbours don't. All shops, supermarkets and garages are closed in that 'north of Lancaster to Kendal' area.....

they moved northwards in that film, ending in Carlisle.

Apparently the main road bridge at Pooley has gone, isolating the east side of Ullswater, never mind that footage through Kirkstone Pass on show there.....

I live on the outskirts of Carlisle so am lucky to be warm and dry. Still got electric as efforts are focussed on keeping water out of the substations. I really feel for friends who are flooded yet again. Fortunately they’re safe and staying with family and friends for the forseeable future. Not sure that they’ll bounce back as quickly this time as they know how long the repairs will take – months and months rather than weeks.

I think the problems will only really become apparent tomorrow as people try to go about their business. The main trunk roads in Carlisle are like the spokes of a wheel all converging on one large roundabout which is currently under water so getting from A-to B could be a challenge and involve circular tours of the city. Likewise shopping. Some of the big supermarkets are flooded. But there’s a good community spirit. Cumbrians are tough and will bounce back.

I have friends in Carlisle. The wife has Alzheimer's and is practically immobile. The husband does the majority of the caring. I haven't been able to contact them and so am worried sick. Called the wife's sister last night, as she lives in Bedford. She hasn't been able to contact them either, so we are waiting for news. It's heartbreaking, I love Carlisle.

Sir Alec. Hope you get news soon and they’re safe. If you know where they live in Carlisle it’s the same areas that were flooded last time – Warwick Road area near the football ground, Denton Holme, Caldewgate near McVities and the new Sainsburys, Hardwick Circus near the Sands Centre. The electricity has been cut off in flood affected areas so cordless phones won’t work. Rescue workers are knocking on all doors to help evacuate people and take them to one of the several centres in the city.
