Dreams

Really didnt know where to post this since there isnt a psychology section.
But what are your thoughts on dreams? A quick google will bring up a plethora of pages of different ideas re: dreams and what they are or what their function is. Ive read that 80% of dreams are unpleasant (so perhaps our unconscious dealing with the *** that we cant handle in waking life?)
I had a dream back in the summer of this year that still 'haunts' me now.
In the dream I was at some kind of function/party and was asked to sit at a table outside. When I got there, there were cameras filming for tv. I started to eat and then realised that my jaws werent moving. This caused me a great deal of anxiety but then I realised that my jaws wernt moving because my heart had stopped. I then started to fall downwards (on my back, looking up) and realised that I had died and was dropping into hell.
All very vivid and all very perplexing. That dream still pops into my head now.
Why?

It’s not for me to call it nonsense but there’s something I’ve always wondered – if the brain deems it important to give us information through dreams (as ‘experts’ claim) why do it in such a convoluted manner as to need these experts to interpret it? Surely ‘tell it like it is’ would be better?
BTW you mention that yours is a dream that still pops into your head now. Doesn’t surprise me, but it doesn’t make it important. Occasionally we all have dreams so vivid we can’t help but remember them. I get recurrent themes – one in particular that has sort of ‘developed’ over the past year – but one of the earlier ones is far more memorable than the more recent, for no more reason I can think of than it was just very vivid.
Elina, I think most people find eating in public awkward, Interesting take on my dream tho ;-) never thought of that. Not sure where the dropping into hell fits in tho...
anax, regarding recurring dreams, When I was in my teenage years/early 20's I had a recurring dream of been in a store and getting on a downward escalator. The escalator speeded up when I was on it and it flung me of the end, at which point I woke up (with a start) Someone I knew at the time told me that it was a memory of been born (and apparently I was a difficult birth). Interestingly these dreams stopped after that.

I'm interested in dreams. Most of mine are very dull, but the occasional exciting one stays with me for a long time. Often, in my dreams I'm trapped in an awkward situation, but I usually find I can say to myself "This is just a dream, I can imagine my way out of it" and do, while still staying asleep.
My take on dreams is that they tend to be pretty straightforward reflections of your life and troubles.
Seated outside at a social event.....feeling rejected
Thinking you're dying.....feeling out of control of your life
Thinking you're going to hell....feeling guilty about the past
Just my thoughts.
