British Gas Value For Money Or Rip Off?

Looking for a condenser boiler for my father, work involves removal of old one and new one fitted are British Gas usually more expensive than local firms.

They beat all other quotes when we got our new boiler, but they had special offers at the time, with discounts for over 60's. Worth getting several quotes

What counts with me is that I regard British Gas fitters as people who know what they are doing, and they do a good job. A local man may not be familiar with the boiler that you might want, but, if he wants your custom, he will keep quiet about that and hope that it all works when he has finished.

I had a new boiler fitted before Xmas. British gas were over £1,000 more expensive than my local plumber, and that's with 20 per cent off the cost of the boiler!

I think the company are damned expensive, but at least you have a level of peace of mind with them. Admit I've never bought a boiler from them, but ever since I gave up on so called trusted traders not fixing a heating issue a year or so back, I've signed up to have them cover the heating repairs. And they seem to know what they are about, which makes a change.

We had a power cut, called out BG thinking it'll cost a fortune, it cost nothing, all part of the service.

The boiler I had fitted comes with a ten year guarantee. If there's any problems I can phone the manufacturer.

Yes British Gas Homecare is excellent, gives you peace of mind. Always make sure you ask for a BG qualified engineer and not one of their contractors though.

Melv, it make be covered for 10 years but will they come out within 24 hours if there's a problem.

BG got me out of the mess Worcester Bosch left me in......so I've been with them ever since.....

The new boiler was more expensive than some others but their Homecare service is excellent.

MIL recently got a boiler through BG, was the cheapest by far, service outstanding plus they picked up on a leak on her gas fire that non of the other fitters bothered to look at!

Yes they will Margo. Worcester Bosch have a large network of service people. As long as I have it serviced annually (£50-00) the guarantee is valid. How much is a British gas service contract?

I'm not sure about BG sending their own contractors - they did a combi boiler for me some years ago, and all the workers on site were subcontracted to Centrica. They were neat and efficient, and it took me three years to find the spectacularly badly installed thermostatic radiator valve which has slowly oozed and caused floorboarding to swell. And the condensate pipe that froze solid in the winter of 2010, it it had no insulation whatsoever whereas common sense suggested it should be insulated. And the boiler flue that faced directly into the prevailing winds so when there was a fierce snow storm the boiler broke down. Apart from that, and apart from being incredibly expensive, BG was fine.
