If threads about this had to be pulled then, by all means pull this one, too. I just expected the AB crowd would be spitting feathers at this situation.

Hi jno
already, one expert has deduced that because their last, conventional, device triggered a 5.1 quake that what may have happened is that just the trigger device went off but it failed to generate enough compression to initiate the fusion half.
Anyway, whoever sold them the knobbled blueprints probably won't last long.
I once read the Wiki on 50s tests and there were some "conventional" tests *after* the first fusion successes. Maybe these are our own duds, cunningly disguised?

You always need to bear in mind that a lot of these announcements by dictators are largely for the benefit of their own people. No doubt many members of the PDRK are walking tall (or as tall as they reasonably can) in the knowledge that the supreme/dear etc leader has built a big bomb.

By the way, I am puzzled by the photo of the mushroom cloud in the DM article. It is supposed to be a screen-grab from NK TV, of the claimed test but it has to be a library image as it looks like it is on a coast with some islands in the background. The test site is supposed to be in the mountains.
Anyone know anything about the prevailing winds? Will Japan or China be in line to have the fallout land on them?
Worse still, the sea. Fukushima contamination reached the States, allegedly.

Quite so, Baz.
My main worry is that the existing nuclear powers understand their use as a deterrent*. I'm not sure that NKs share that outlook or whether they would unilaterally hit out at their (perceived) imperialist threat (ie "the West") and, if they did, then what? Each attempt, by us, to retaliate becomes the justification for the next one off their production line. It would be like the Israel/Palestine situation.
But if we fail to retaliate, we're doomed to be pushed around by their demands forever.
* against land invasion. Only two countries can do this without a long - and conspicuous - sea voyage. Where's the threat, against them?

Give or take misreading the NK abbreviation (which got mangled by the AB anti-shouting adjuster mechanism) you actually answered what I asked, so BA awarded to you.
Discussion of the fallout - both political and literal - of the test is still welcome but is adding width, rather than addressing the lack of interest amongst us. Maybe we have more sangue froid than I give people credit for?
