Cats and Ducks

Has anyone else had a cat that has caught ducks? I've got an 18-month-old cat that brought a huge adult Mallard from the nearby park through the catflap. I've never heard of this before (birds, mice, rats, frogs, bats and insects yes) and wondered if anyone had a similar experience. The physics of how he actually did it are baffling - it was twice his size.

(Happily the duck was taken to RSPCA and survived to fight another day.)

My neighbours cat once caught a seagull. She found the cat trying to pull the seagull through the cat flap. The gull was a little shaken up but survived the experience.

Also my cat recently brought home a live budgie!! very strange. I know its only small but i was'nt aware we had free flying budgies in this country! suspect she pinched it from a house. The budgie survived!

There are wild budgie flocks in London, descendants of excaped pets!

I had a cat that killed squirrells and brought them home quite regularly.  He was a real hooligan of a cat and would chase all the local dogs down the street!  Never brought a dog home though.

My cat once killed another cat. He didn't drag it home or anything, don't think cats are cannibals!? But all the same we were a bit shocked when the owners of the other cat told us!!

My sons two cats often bring in rabbits,and one of his neighbours is wondering where his racing pigeons are vanishing to.

My cat once killed a massive crow. We didn't have a cat flap, so it just dragged it to the door and sat guarding it.

But most of the time it used to bring home shrews. You'd wake up and find it sat at the bototm of your bed with a nice, dead rodent for you. How delightful.

I had a cat who managed to bring a baby wild rabbit through the cat flap one night. Fortunately it was still alive and we returned it to the warren the following day.

When I was younger, my old cat Soot's (RIP) used to bring in parts of cement bags during the night from the small estate they were building across the road. Some pieces were so big he couldn't get them thru the catflap and would leave them on the doorstep outside. Some even had really big clumps of cement on them! how he dragged them home we'll never know. He even brought in an old fag packet! we assume from across the road too. He was old bless him, and once the estate was finished I dont think he ever brought in anything ever again. Ofcourse when he was a younger cat, he brought in the usual mice, birds etc..

Oh Wingnut, your old cat sounds like he was a lovely character, I enjoyed your posting very much.

FP, your cat must have been part bionic to catch squirrels on a regular basis; mine are much too lazy for that.

Aschenbach, my cats have never caught ducks, but like most cats they've regularly caught rabbits, mice, shrews, voles, etc. I came downstairs one morning to find a massive dead rat on top of the sideboard! YUK, the thought still makes me shudder.

I have a German Shepherd dog whose dad used to occasionally scale an 8-foot fence, swim the river (even in full flood) over to the nearby smallholding, ignore the sheep and cows, but help himself to a chicken, then swim all the way back and jump back over the fence with it for a tasty lunch.

My cat brought home a kipper I cleaned it up and gave it to my mother-in-law she hates me I hate her she ate the kipper. Happy days!

I was just remembering that my mother in law's old ginger cat brought home a cooked joint of lamb once, still warm!  One of her neighbours obviously missed their lunch, but I don't think they ever dared find out who!

We once got a phone call from a neighbour that there was a mag pie flapping around in our bedroom window.

Our smallest cat must have taken it in through the catflap and up to the bedroom and onto the windowsill as the curtains are always shut so that only she can get on the windowsill (and not our other cat who would eat all her food).

Still to this day don't know how she managaed to get a magpie through the catflap and all the way upstairs, but we do know she has a thing for them as she sits and watches them in the trees and does a funny half miaow (without sound) with her mouth.

Yes but it was in a park and the duck suffered fatal windpipe injury from cats sharp teeth. Cats usuallyare more aggressive if unneutered but all are scourges that kill tons of wildlife needlessly.
