Would You Book To Go To Egypt?
40 Answers
Its the time of the year in our household where we need something in the calendar to look forward to, making the January blues bearable!
We have considered a few destinations, a week at Easter and a week in October. For apparent value and climate - Egypt, on paper, cant be faulted.
But with concerns already in the back of my mind before the recent terrible acts in Egypt, I just cant risk taking my family. I realise that attacks are still rare, but it is the completely random nature that scares me - I suspect the terrorists aim is to make you feel scared, anywhere and at any time.
So we are left with Greece, Majorca or the Canaries.
Would anybody book Egypt?

This link obviously is about yesterdays Islamic attack on tourists but quotes tourists who arrived at the resort two weeks ago. They wanted to see the Pyramids and all other sight seeing attractions that Egypt offers.
They were confined to quarters under armed guard and not allowed out of the resort complex.
Sounds more like House Arrest than a stress free informative break in the sun!!! :-(
//Once there, Mark, father of two daughters aged three and two said he felt unsafe and that the guests they spoke to were also only there because they couldn't get their money back.
'At the airport the security is quite good but then you're travelling on these empty desert roads.
Mr Nolan said there were police road blocks in front of his resort, which near the Bella Vista Hotel.
'There were metal detectors at the door - but everybody just walked round them.
'You can't leave the resort and there are no excursions - you wouldn't dare get on a bus to go and see the pyramids, which is why we went to Egypt in the first place.'//

Hi, Jd.....it's a holiday.....you want to enjoy and relax...I would choose somewhere else....not in a million years Egypt...
Two of my friends planned, at teacher training, to go together for a holiday of a lifetime in Egypt when they retired....a student dream....but they did it.
Arrived....boarded a ship for a cruise down the Nile and all hell broke out on land......
They spent days stuck on a ship going nowhere with conditions getting worse by the day......were eventually dumped on shore...had to find digs for the night and a flight home.....took them ages and with gunfire and rioting all around.
It had cost them a fair sum and they got not a penny back.....
So...it's not just the risk of being killed would put me off.....it would be daft to fork out for a holiday that wasn't relaxing and peaceful..
Enjoy wherever you choose...x

I've been once. The brochure described the hotel as though the surrounding area had cafes, shops and bars. The truth was it was the hotel bar/cafe/shop and the hotel was 45 mins from the nearest town. We went to that town for the day and I was called a s l a g. This wasn't a tourist town and the hotel should have warned us.
I did enjoy the holiday as the only activities we could take part in was scuba diving. The rest of the time was sunbathing, swimming, eating and drinking.
I wouldn't go back though.

It is heart rending to agree with retro cop
I wouldnt go to Egypt for about a year - I reluctantly advised my frenz that and we cancelled Jan 16 a few months ago. Big bucket holiday planned and I was gonna be their interpreter and show the young ones the good side of Egypt. Travel companies NOT very understanding - they like taking your money and dont like giving it back.
Oh and I speak good Egyptian arabic southern dialect
having worked there
Heart breaking - the working class there will starve - and they say the economy has dropped about a billion bucks. I would say that it a low estimate I would put the loss at much more ( two or three )
Go somewhere else

Coming back to JD's point about the states and gun crime.....and having been around the Middle East a bit before the Jasmine Rev kicked off.....even at the best of times, the difference between countries like Egypt and the States is respect for and enforcement of the rule of law. Even at the best of times in Egypt, if you wanted any degree of justice it came with a price for every official to be dealt with up the food chain. Lord knows how the people are managing now.
// I have a robust view of terrorist activity//
so do I - I tend to keep small children away from it TBH
You are obviously following in the footsteps ( pun intended ) of the Victorian lady traveller who commented - "Long dresses are a hindrance when one is fleeing from natives"
memo: wear cozzy at all times

No, I wouldn't book to go to Egypt. I would suggest Cyprus (Limassol area) although there can be a few 'sandy' days. I went once in February and it was interesting that in the morning I was lounging in a swimming cossie by the pool and in the afternoon was dodging skiers in the snow a bit higher up!
Otherwise, |I second Gness's suggestion of the Algarve - especially if you get off the main coastal drag, but even that is great. Northern Majorca is great - but you may need to speak German!

We have booked Spain for Easter, its not original but it is familiar and has the facilities the family need to tick every box. Chosen a resort we haven't been to before, Fuengirola. Its not the worlds most exclusive but give me some sun and a cold beer and I am easily pleased. For the money spent we could have gone to Egypt, 5 star all inc for 10 days but despite my own logic regarding the likelihood of being caught up in something, my heart ruled my head and we have chosen not to go.
