Garden leave is when you are paid to stay at home. Not sure why they did that though, your friend was just off sick.
most usually used in to protect industry plans etc. for an example a friend of mine was working for a mobile technology company when he resigned he was asked to take 3 months garden leave - this means that he wasn't allowed into the office and he wasn't allowed to start working for anyone else until his contract expired with his previous employer... this stopped him (hypothetically) going to the companies rivals and telling them exactly what their competitors were doing right at that minute e.g. his previous employers had at least 3 months head start on their technological innovations being copied elsewhere.

Your mate will have been asked to do this ask presumably the employer wanted to have some reassurance that a sudden return to health wouldn't have them suddenly working for the opposition.

The expression 'garden leave' means literally that you are on leave to stay at home and dig your garden - in other words you are not ill or dismissed.

It is used as in the examples given - airline pilots get it if there is a slack period in their company - because they are so expensive to train, it is ecconomical to keep them employed even when they are idle, because it is still cheaper than tore-train someone from scratch.

It's actually Gardening Leave

Hi guys thanks for your help, i don't think she had any choice in the matter ,her company made the decision for her ,but will pass on what you said.

gammaray thank you but that is the whole point of the question we didn't know what is was or the correct name x

The term Gardening Leave was used before mobile phones became common. When you were serving your notice and the company decided they did not want you in the office, they could still require you to be contactable by telephone. In practice, this usually meant staying at home to be near the phone. Some companies would arrange to call regularly and if you weren't there, they docked your pay.
