Will other supermarkets follow suit - and will anyone miss 24 hour shopping?

Well, I would if the nearest 24-hour Tesco to me was actually one of those that was cutting its hours. I quite often shop at 3, 4 or 5am (although admittedly more often at Asda than Tesco, simply because it's closer to me).

They may be missed in cities like that London which we all know are full of weird beards anyway.
The rest of us have the brains to lie down and go to sleep for a while so no, on the whole they'll not be missed.

Out in the sticks like me the only people who go to Tesco in the middle of the night are oddballs. I wouldn't miss it at all. I can see in busy cities, especially with shift workers it might be missed.

Only went once, when I had insomnia and the shop was in virtual darkness!! Needed a torch to find things.

Asda already did it in many of their stores a couple of years ago. About time too. Who in their right mind wants to go shopping in the middle of the night (or Sundays, bank holidays too for that matter but that's never going to happen)

On the very few occasions that I have shopped after midnight in Tesco, it has been virtually empty, apart from a few staff refilling the shelves.Some on my local Tesco stores have stopped the 24 hour nonsense anyway, and now its only left in the 2 "Extra" stores. To be honest, I never really understood the point of it.

Well the point was probably to capture the market of all those that toil in odd hours.

On the odd times when I have been in late at night they are stacking shelves so all they have to do is open a till occasionally.

Ours used to open 24/7 but stopped years ago....I used to go in very very early sometimes and like youngmafbog says, they were in there shelf stacking anyway so it was just a question of having one till open or someone to service the DIY tills. At the time they couldn’t sell alcohol 24/7 and I think this caused some issues with people turning up to buy booze and being refused, getting stroppy and the police being called in. After this they used to to 24/7 shopping around christmas and new year but I don’t think they did even that last christmas.
