We have just finished our serrano ham from Aldi, bought for Christmas for about £35. We have had some most days, and it was just as sweet and nutty and flavoursome today as it was day 1. I have chopped up the bones made some stock and with last remnants of ham creating pea and ham soup. This has been tremendous value for money; Jamie Oliver eat your heart out lol!
There was a post on this ham just before Christmas, and the opinion was it was very chewy.Which was put down to being too cheap to be much good! (top quality Serrano Ham is over £40 a kilo!)
Have we changed our opinions?
I still maintain the flavour is there and it is not too chewy if you cut it correctly.
I agree there are grades of serrano that differ in price and Lidl and Aldi offer it incredibly cheaply. You could hardly buy it that cheap in other Spanish supermarkets. I know. I considered buying and bringing one home from Spain.
The price differs like Rioja wine. You can pay a reasonable price or silly money.
My son bought a Lidl serrano last Christmas. I never got to eat any of his.I asked this Christmas if I could borrow his Jamon serano stand and he had chucked it out saying never again the ham was too chewy. He sampled the same quality I had bought and agreed itwas far better than his only because he admitted to hacking great chunks off the leg instead of slicing it delicately. It really does make all the difference. That is why there are so many video clips available to show how it should be carved and enjoyed. I will buy another this year as previously stated.
