Are there places that have amazed or moved you, unexpectedly perhaps?

Some of mine:

Culloden: haunting

The new Coventry Cathedral: having lived from birth amid mediaeval churches and a wonderful Norman cathedral I thought I would hate it. It moved me to tears.

Venice: on my first visit, coming out of a narrow waterway (in a water taxi from the airport) into the Grand Canal just by the Rialto ~ magical!

The top of snowdon. It was cloudy and very windy. I went to stand on a promontory and as I stood there the whole sky went gold and the clouds suddenly parted. From being able to see about 100yds I could, see about 60 miles! I was incredible.

Fountains Abbey and York Minster, that was before the fire. The Minster has a very special atmosphere inside.
Oh and The Tsavo National Park in Kenya.
Hi snags, long time so see. How's CD?

Masai Mara wildebeest migration blew me away.

Zacs, the only time I tried to climb Snowdon I was defeated by the fog. But I had a similar experience to yours on a mountain in Madeira. One moment I could see nothing, a few seconds later I could see the whole island.
Glencoe
