I need to hire a car for our holiday. There will be five adults. I am being offered a Ford Focus, VW Golf or Renault Megane. Which will offer the most seating space on the back seat?

They all seem to be too small to me- especially if you have 5 people's luggage
You may need all 3...:-)
I'd agree with FF, two decent sized suitcases will nearly fill the boot on all of those and although they will all seat three in the back it's going to be snug.
Things will be quite cosy , with 5 people , especially if you are spending a reasonable amount of time in the car

It will be hand luggage only. My two sons are quite large (gym bods) and my poor daughter will end up being squashed in the middle!

Ford C Max?
The first review for a C Max when Googling comes up with a 'con' of 'shoulder room tight on centre rear seat'
Your other problem is going to be that no car hire company I've gone with has ever guaranteed what model you'll end up with :-(
Bit of a squash - we hired a car in Croatia last year, for 5 amply sized adults - and ended up with a Skoda Octavia estate. Even that was too small (everyone was moaning about the squeeze) - we should have traded up and got a VW Passat Estate ....
I had a Renault Megan Scenic a few years ago and there was plenty of room.

But have you considered where all the luggage for 5 adults is going to go ?

Rent a much bigger car !
Of those the Renault Megane has the most room. But as said the hire company only offer a 'size' of car like 'compact' 'family' 'large' you can end up with anything in the range.
mikey, the Megane scenic is a larger car more like a 'people carrier'.
It is indeed Eddie. I found mine very versatile in 2002-2004 when I had one as a company car. It had a marvelous facility where the 3 rear seats could be "off-set" so to speak, so that the 3 people were not shoulder to shoulder.

But it would still be a tight squeeze me thinks. Perhaps an estate car of some sort might be better. A friend has a Mondeo Estate which I have been in quite a lot this week, and I was impressed with the roominess.
