Hi all, does anyone know where the word 'flytipping' comes from (I know what it is, just wondered why it's called this!)?

Thanks!

One meaning of 'fly' is 'crafty' so fly-tipping may just refer to the fact that it is something done cunningly or craftily. Another possibility is that it refers to the element of speed involved...ie roll up to the place, rapidly drop the rubbish and quickly disappear again...a bit like the idea of 'fly-by-night', as it were.

Thanks Quizmonster - similar ideas to the ones swimming through my head, but much better put! ;)
perhaps done 'on the fly' - on the run - which is basically QM's second suggestion.
