Tablet/laptop Battery

My wife got a brand new HP Pavillion x360 Convertible at Christmas. She has used it for about 3 hours in total since then.We notice that the battery runs down quite quickly even when not in use. For example, I used up the battery on Saturday until it completely drained.I then charged it on the mains up to 100%.Then I switched it off for exactly 24 hours and checked the battery level after that.It is showing 63% remaining. Surely this is not normal??

Modern laptops, especially the skinny ones, dont last very long because they are power hungry. You might be able to get a 9 cell battery which would last longer, LED screens use less power if you are thinking of buying.

My question was how long should the battery charge last when tablet not in use!! As also stated it was only bought at Christmas so why would she get a another new one so soon??

Was it completely shut down? It could have been downloading and installing updates, running security scans in the background.

Yes, completely shut down and power cord removed. I have owned at least 10 PC/laptops over the years....I worked in IT for quite a number of years also so I know what to expect from these machines but the battery itself has me stumped. I'm convinced that a battery drain of 37% within 24 hours is not normal when the PC itself is inactive. I just want to be convinced that I should bring it back to the dealer.

If you are absolutely sure that it was shut-down and not sleeping then I feel you must have a faulty battery. I'd get in touch with the shop you bought it from and complain.

Oh yes, it was fully shut down. Just to be sure I'm draining the battery again now and will charge and shut down once again before heading to shop. Thanks for help. MR

Apparently a full charge should get you nearly 6 hours of useage?

I have HP laptops and I'd completely forgotten that HP support have a procedure for you to test your battery.

I had this problem once and it was related to Fast Boot. Fast Boot kept my hard disk on hibernate mode so it drained the battery even when it's not on. Try and see if Fast Boot is enabled and then disable it. It could work.

The life of a modern battery is measured in full charge / discharge cycles. Continually running it to flat will shorten the life considerably.

Most of the answers, for which I'm most thankful, have not addressed my question so I will ask it another way : bearing in mind that the PC is only a few weeks old and has been used for only a few hours, I would like to know what the battery life between charges should be, plz.

I should also have stated that the PC has not been powered up between charges and yet drains to 63%.

Six hours should be about right depending on your power settings when turned up to max performance probably four hours. When I fired up an older Dell laptop that had not been used for over a month it was still 80% charged

When the laptop is turned off it should be using no power at all and only a little power to boot it up.

If possible, try removing the battery when it is fully charged and then see how much charge there is when you reconnect it after a few days.

It should not be draining your battery when it is turned off!
