I think that's fair enough. My son watches things on iplayer and uses his tv only to watch DVDs and Netflix because he didn't want to pay the licence fee. It seems he'll have to now.

How was it a loophole ? The rule was if it wasn't live then downloading video was exempt. They're not closing a loophole; they're changing the rules.

Realistically, how many people who have a computer don't have a TV (and therefore don't have a licence)
It would make more sense to abolish the TV licence and replace it with a "media" licence or somesuch.
People complain about the was the BBC is funded, but it is actually a very democratic way off funding broadcasting. Better than a straight tax.
One look at Mr Whittingdale though is enough to turn your stomach. It is thanks to his govt's disgraceful policy of making the BBC pay for the government's free licences for over 75s that will be largely responsible for the major shortfall in BBC funding over the next few years.
As a Brexitter he is supposedly a supporter of "Britain" and its "sovereignty" and yet would I am sure be prepared to see one of Brtain's greatest assets dissolved. Most odd.

I'd probably be in favour of a fee if i was convinced that there was not a lot of wastage /duplication / unnecessary jobs in the cooperation .

It would be interesting to see a comparison between the BBC and another comparable broadcaster , to see , on what they both spend their cash.

Replace licence fee income with a levy on 'rival' entertainments? A bit extra on cinema and theatre tickets and on the amount TV/radio advertisers pay.
