Thanks, but that raises another query for me - why is "at university" UP?
Recognised meaning of up in crosswords
Question Author
OK - any idea why? I've managed not to come across it before
That's why you can be 'sent down' :)
Standard in crosswords - you go 'up' to university
Suppose it is the opposite of sent down(expelled from university)
Up

British At or to a university, especially Oxford or Cambridge:
they were up at Cambridge about the same time.
