For more on marking an answer as the "Best Answer", please visit our FAQ.your cd player should be able to play tracks that are in mp3 format, however, some older cd players wont play any cd's that are burnt, perhaps that is the problem? personally, i wouldnt use windows media player to burn cd's i'd use a programme such as nero which is specifically for burning cd's and will copy your music files in the correct format.

CDs contain data files in CDA (Compact Disc Audio) format. These are equivalent to WAV files on a PC, in that they are not compressed like mp3, WMA and various others around.
In order to play CDRs on standard CD players, you need to burn the WAV files to the CD (the simplest way of doing this is to select 'make audio CD' in whichever program you are using - This will usually allow you to select mp3/WMA files and convert them to WAV for you before burning)
That said, however, it then depends on your CD player whether it will read them or not. Like Catherine says, not all CD players will read home-made CDs, whilst some will read your mp3/WMA CDs that are burnt as data files rather than audio
