'Good' wine and hangovers
26 Answers
I'm often told that 'good wine' doesn't give you a hangover. In spite of years of trying I don't suffer from hangovers myself and as far as I'm concerned ALL wine is good (urf, urf) but have always wondered whether this has any basis in fact or is just another urban myth given voice by purveyors of expensive bottles of plonk with fancy labels and long names - any Abers got any insights on this one? Cheers!

I had a bottle of $5.99 wine the other night (don't ask) and the day after as I hung my head in a bucket - I didn't even make it to the bathroom - I actually wished I would die. The worst hang-over's I have had are just real bad headache's and a stomachache that goes away by the evening. I didn't even get half as drunk with that wine but it sure hit my body hard the next day. My advice? Don't drink (in large quantities) cheap wine. Just don't.
Hi.
I was trying to remember the word sulphites, which are added to many or most commercial wines as a clarifier. Sulphites are said to be the cause of the headaches. Organic winemakers don't add them (although grape wines contain trace amounts naturally)
Anyway, in trying to recall the word, I did an internet search for wine additives, and the result is: I recommend not looking it up yourself, as it's rather disheartening.
And please enjoy your wine on my behalf too. I've been disqualified from drinking the stuff because of said headaches. Jeez, I loved the stuff too.
Aloha
Hey Dave. It's the extra crap they put in both on the grapes and as part of the wine making process. Instead of buying expensive wines, try organic wines (Somerfield has a very good one on at the moment - called terra organica - at a fiver). You will still suffer the results of dehydration, etc etc, but there will be no billiard ball clunking around in your skull. Honest.
