furthermore how do i find out the speed of my dvd rw?

if i right click properties on the dvd drive it allows me to select upto x18 but this is only a �499 packard bell easy note laptop

Do you have nero installed to burn discs with? That has an "infotool" app

and if you can choose upto 18x, I'd assume that it can operate up to that speed. What speed the discs can be burnt upto is a different matter though.
